Volume of typescripts of letters from Thomas Dale in Charleston, S.C., to Rev. Mr. Gough and Rev. Thomas Birch, in London, 9 letters, 23 Mar. 1731/32- Dec. 19, 1736, re appreciation for Birch's help in the publication of Dale's poetry, relating news of events in Charleston, including the burial of his wife, soliciting Birch's opinion of the Latin epitaph composed for the marker, and mentioning remarriage in the near future; also includes extracts of correspondence, 7 Feb.-31 Aug. 1736, between Samuel Dale and Birch. Collection also includes poem composed as an epilogue to a widely popular play of the 18th century, The Recruiting Officer (by George Farquhar); Dale's poem was published in the Gentleman's Magazine (VI, May [1736], p. 288), titled: "Ilogue to the Recruiting Officer, written by Thomas Dale, M.D. and spoken by Silvia in Men's Cloaths, at the Opening of the New Theatre, in Charles- Town in South Carolina, in 1734."
